How Starbucks ' quarterly getaway cup turned into a battle for America's mind and spirit.
When a pot is more than just a mug.

Since November, Starbucks has officially unveiled the "holiday cups" lineup for this year, which are four festive ( but not overly festive ) choices. options are available, as is one washable mug, which is basic purple.

Here they are.

May anyone go crazy? This talk about.

As the press release for the occasion explains, the four pot models are meant to get the two-decade story of the getaway Coffee glass, initially introduced in 1997. The firm added "doses of handmade colors and patterns... and reinterpreted them with visual panache, and a dash of ] sparkles and flourish" for this year's cups in the soul of nostalgia.

The plaid green sun glass, named" Stargyle," refers to a scene from Christmas Blend 1999 that depicts a few"grabbing up and placing a celebrity atop a tree." The" Stripes" cup is intended to tastefully evoke the extremely controversial ( "iconic" ) red cup, while also referencing the sealed seam that runs along the back of Starbucks coffee bags.

The" Flora" edition features "ripe caffeine plums," which are also present on the getaway plates of 2013 and 2017, and the red-and-white" Espresso Houndstooth" has something to do with the way the company's Christmas Blend Espresso Roast coffee is dark and prosperous, as is the style of houndstooth, which looks like it looks like lights. ( I'm using paraphrasing here. )

They're fine cups! In fact, the Refinery29 cup critics called them" the best we've seen in years." They are very tasteful, in a very safe way: they are pleasantly abstract and very Christmassy, but they lack much of Christmas' more overt iconography: they're ripe coffee cherries, okay? - and evocative of simpler times, like 1997.
